It sounds simple, right – but we don’t do it enough.
When I worked at a start up biotechnology company many years ago, the CEO used to say “you never get dumb from talking to people”. Every week he required us to get out of the office and talk to at least ten new people. These interactions often gave us very good marketing ideas, leads to physicians working in our field and sometimes a new employee.
Expanding on his advice some, it is amazing what you can learn by just listening to a total stranger. Talk is cheap. The person sitting next to you on the bus, the woman walking her dog at the park, the gentleman next to you at CVS while you both wait for your prescriptions to be filled—these are all people who might lead you to a valuable job search tip or may connect you to a job opportunity.
You just never know who could turn out to be your next, best resource.
Get started today. Ask someone how their day is or what kind of dog they have? Give someone a chair or offer to help someone with their packages. Initiate a conversation and see where it goes.
