The October, 2011 unemployment numbers were released this morning and total US unemployment was 9.0%. Unemployment has now been 8.8 percent or higher for the past 31 months. This contrasts to the two years leading up to the start of the recession (2006-7) when unemployment averaged 4.6 percent–nearly half of what is has been recently.
During October, a total of 25.4 million people were either unemployed, underemployed or have given up.
These numbers are a huge scourge to our society as people suffer to achieve the most basic of human needs—the ability to support oneself.
